I’m sure you have heard the scenario before where someone asks you what you would do if you were given only six months to live. For some reading this, this may truly be your situation. Many will typically imagine a “bucket list” of experiences that they would want to get to before their lives end.
Now imagine that you are given only 24 hours, or even 12 hours to live. There have been a few movies with this premise. Typically, the protagonist either tries to solve the mystery of who poisoned them or spends their final moments devising a plan of retribution to those who are responsible.
All of these examples really seem to be self-focused. Even many who imagine the goal of spending as much time with their loved ones as they can, may be seeking this for their own fulfillment. But what did Jesus demonstrate for us? Jesus is the “exact imprint” of God (Hebrews 1:3), and being God Himself, Jesus was fully aware of His impending death on the cross. What did He do?
Jesus did not spend His final hours fulfilling a personal bucket list. Instead, He used this valuable, final night to love His disciples and impart to them His final, important teachings. Collectively, these final teachings are referred to as the “upper room discourse.”
Join us as we explore the upper room discourse recorded in John chapters 13-17 as we study what Jesus taught in the hours leading up to His crucifixion.
